Die Steinburg wurde im 13. Jh. am Zusammenfluss von Neris und Nemunas gebaut, um gegen die feindlichen Angriffe der Kreutzritter zu schützen. Das ist die erste Schützungsburg und Stadtmauer. Um die Burg herum wurde die Siedlung gegründet, die auf die jetzige Stadt aufwuchs.
