Rumsiskes is a small picturesque town situated on the right bank of the Nemunas River, 80 km from Vilnius. The town existed here from time immemorial, but the first historical reference to it dates back to the 14 century. Nowadays in the surroundings not far from the modern town one can come across numerous barrow graves and fortress hills that have been preserved from the ancient time.
There is a place near Rumsiskes, where the time seems to have stopped. It is the National Ethnographic Open-air Museum Rumsiskes. It was founded in 1966 and has been opened to the public since 1974. The visitors can get acquainted with architecture, traditions, crafts and life of the different Lithuanian regions in the 18-beginning of the 20th century. The museum occupies territory of 20 hectares; it is a small village, presenting Lithuania in miniature. The museum's exposition is divided into four ethnographic regions Aukstaitija, Zemaitija, Suvalkija and Dzukija. Traditional buildings present the characteristic features of the rural architecture of the each region. You can enter any house and see with your own eyes how people lived hundred years ago. Authentic furniture, crockery, kitchen articles, tools are at the display.
Museum guides, dressed in traditional clothes, will tell you about culture and tradition of Lithuanian folk. In some buildings the process of some kind of work is demonstrated: making pots of clay, processing of the amber, wood, metal, weaving, etc. In the museum premises different folklore festivals and fairs, where you can buy works of applied art, made by local craftsmen, are held regularly. A typical Lithuania tavern offers national meals and local beer.
